New Broom - Grasshopper

I just ordered a “new age” broom: one that “outsweeps” them all . . . if you’re to believe their ads. I’ll let you know after I test it out.

But hitting the “buy now” button reminded me of that old saying in business: New ownership . . . new broom.

It meant things were about to change – the new folks in charge were going to sweep out the old ways and bring in the new. And if you worked there before the switch? You might’ve had a few sleepless nights wondering if you’d still have a job.

But this isn’t about job security. It’s about your life moving forward.

What old, worn-out, dusty ideas could you sweep out of your life to make room for something better?

Here’s a big one – and it’s almost uniquely American: spending money you don’t have. Somehow, we’ve been sold the idea that you can spend your way out of debt. You can’t. That’s a notion that’s “broom-worthy.”

Here’s another: “Change fat into muscle!” Yeah . . . no. Fat is fat. Muscle is muscle. One doesn’t magically turn into the other, no matter what the late-night infomercials say. Lose the fat, and sure, you’ll see more muscle – but it’s not a Clark-Kent-into-Superman situation. Time to sweep that myth away, too.

So, what does your broom need to work on? If you’re not sure, just look at any area of your life that’s clearly not working. That’s usually where the dust piles up – old beliefs, stale habits – all begging to be swept out so you can enjoy a brighter, cleaner day.

Here’s a little trick to get you in gear: do a mental housecleaning. 

Picture yourself sweeping out all those dusty, outdated ideas. Make it a clean sweep. You’re creating space for something new to move in.

And once you spot the pattern that needs to go, the question is simple: Are you ready to grab that new broom and sweep away what’s getting in your way?
