Difference Makes a Difference - Grasshopper

Just had a mini reunion with my brothers and sisters. We only get together every five years or so, since we’re spread out all over the country.

It was a great time–lots of memories, lots of laughs, lots of catching up.

But one thing really stood out: how different we are.

I probably didn’t notice it growing up, but it’s crystal clear now. We think differently. We act differently. We dress differently. We are different.

And you know what? Those differences make a difference.

I’m sure there are people who can eat the exact same meal every night–and that works for them. But most of us? We like variety. It keeps things interesting.

Same with people. If everyone was just like you, you'd only ever talk about your similarities. And let’s be honest–that makes for a pretty short conversation.

But when you talk about your differences, something else happens. You explore new ideas. You step outside the usual and enter the “what else is possible?” zone.

So here’s the point: Celebrate your differences. They expand your world. They break you out of the loop of sameness.

I don’t think I’m revealing any big secret here, but most Americans believe the U.S. is the greatest nation on earth. And what contributes to that greatness? Our differences. Everyone brings something unique to the table. That’s what makes the stew so rich.

So maybe, just maybe, it’s time to come out of isolation. Connect. Mix it up.

Because the more diverse the party, the more reasons there are to celebrate.

All the best,
John
