Are You Being Rejected? - Grasshopper
No one escapes rejection. It’s part of life. But when it happens, ask yourself this: What exactly are they rejecting?
Ask any great salesperson and they’ll tell you the secret: it’s not you they’re rejecting. It’s your offer.
When we take rejection personally, we spiral. We hesitate to put ourselves out there again. We start playing it safe. Sound familiar?
It takes me back to middle school dances. You want to ask someone to dance, but you hesitate. You’ve already convinced yourself they’ll say “no.” But let’s say you muster the courage and they do say “no.” Sure, that’s disappointing. But if you tell yourself you were rejected, you’ll go into a spiral of shame.
But if you realize they just declined your invitation–then your self-worth stays intact. You move on. You ask again. You stay in the game.
Years ago, I learned this:?You can ask anything of anybody as long as you’re not invested in what their answer has to be.
Don’t guess. Don’t assume. Don’t hallucinate their response. Just ask. And be okay with what comes back. If you’re only ready to hear “yes,” you’re setting yourself up for a fall.
They’re probably not rejecting you. Odds are, they’re just not saying yes to your offer.
So, start make better offers. Sharpen your pitch. It could fill your coffers–especially if you're in sales. But if the only thing you're putting out there is you, prepare to feel rejected–and a boatload of blue.
