You can reason your way through just about anything in life . . . except matters of the heart.

French philosopher Blaise Pascal summed it up best: “The heart has its reasons, which reason knows nothing of.”

In other words, love doesn’t always make sense – and trying to make sense of it? That’s a dead-end trail.

Sure, we keep trying to define it, understand it, explain it – but let’s be honest: we’re no closer to cracking that code than we were a thousand years ago.

It’s like trying to define infinity. The more time we spend trying to explain love, the less time we spend actually feeling it.

The truth is, affairs of the heart aren’t meant to be analyzed. They’re meant to be experienced. And every time we stop to figure it out, we miss a chance to feel it.

You might ask: “How will I know when it’s real?” Well . . . it’s like what Justice Potter Stewart said about obscenity back in 1964 – “I can’t define it, but I know it when I see it.” And love? You’ll know it when you feel it.

You won’t be able to explain why it showed up, or why it left. You’ll just know that something real happened. Something that doesn’t fit on a spreadsheet.

And if you’re still wondering, “How do I know if I’m in love?” – the best answer is: you’ll just know.

So here’s my take: when love does show up – whether it stays for a while or just passes through – don’t overthink it. Just live it. Feel it while it’s here.

Because trying to explain it? That’s the surest way to miss it.
