I Forgot To Remember - Grasshopper

I ignored the universal, sage advice the other night and went to bed angry.

A few hours later I woke up and went into the bathroom. That trip took about 20 seconds. Then it came back to mind that I was stewing about my upset. Then the Grasshopper popped in and reminded me that I had to remember to be mad.

It got me to recognize who was angry. My mind was angry; I wasn’t. I was at peace, at least for those 20 seconds.

This incident reinforced the reality that I had to be in my head to revive my anger and keep it alive.

It was an instant reminder that our natural state is peace. We disturb that serene sensation and reinvigorate our vexation when we go back into our mind. It brought back one of the Grasshopper’s oldest maxims: “Unwinding is simply unbinding yourself from your thoughts.”

When I reminded myself that I was in my head, it was enough of an interruption to head me back to bed for a peaceful night’s sleep.

When you’re upset, it’s often a relief to recognize it’s your mind that’s the thief of your peace.

Just this minor observation of your upset’s causation reminds us how useful it is to forget to remember.

All the best,
John
