Here But For The Space Of God Am I - Grasshopper
Did you ever notice that everything occupies a space? A space has been made for everything. There is room at the Inn for you and me.
The Grasshopper's turn of English reformer, John Bradford's phrase, "There but for the grace of God go I" communicates a different aspect of gratitude.
Bradford's pronouncement was comparative in nature whereas The Grasshopper's is inclusive. There has been a space made for every one of us. Look at your dining room or kitchen table. There is a space for it to be functional. Without the space it couldn't exist there.
Lao-tzu reminds us in the 11th verse of the Tao Te Ching:
We make doors and windows for a room;
But it is the empty space that makes the room livable,
While the tangible has advantages, it is the intangible that makes it useful.
There has been an earthly space created for us to be useful - to carry out our function or life's purpose.
If there were no space available, there would be no room for you. Therefore, you would not have been created.
I love watching the TV shows where they do a before and after feature on a house. You get to see them take the same square footage and transform it into something more appealing and functional. They create space where none existed before. These shows always underscore the teaching that "less is more."
So we have been given a space on this planet. The question becomes, are we making the best use of our space or are we cluttering it up?
Our space is a gift. We first show our gratitude by recognizing the gift of space and then we demonstrate our thankfulness by crafting our space to be as wonderful as the gift giver intended.
You are spacious expression of the whole. You have been given a little corner of the earth to create your gifts - presents that bring joy to the giver and receiver alike.
It's no accident that you are where you are. If you are making the best use of your space, you are feeling more joy and a sense of purpose. If you are not, your space is out of alignment. It may be time to remodel and create more space in your cluttered life.
The best advice you can get comes from a master craftsman. Make sure to check in daily. Make an appointment for a mind quieting consultation period each day. As your mind calms down, you make a space in there for the craftsman to consult you. The result is a more joyous use of your space.
You will find your place when you appreciate your space.
All the best,
John
