When There’s Nothing To Shoot For, You’ll Shoot Yourself In The Foot - Grasshopper
It takes some target practice to hit what you’re shooting for, but if you’re aimless, you can’t be held blameless for missing out on life.
If you are breathing, you’re alive, but your aliveness is on life support when you’re not breathing life into a purposeful aim.
My experience is that people with no aims aren’t lazy; they’re often in a state of shock. Their state of mind has no rudder and they blindly go off in all directions at once and head nowhere, bumping into all sorts of things causing bruising and pain.
It seems to me that people who are aimless either had something precious taken from them or had some pretty unfocused early care givers. Either way, it’s conditioned behavior that can be reconditioned.
Something as simple as learning a new routine can break the grip of aimlessness. It could be a new technique for doing anything. Just a little practice with something new gets you aimed in a new direction.
People who are aimless don’t need to “get a life”; they just need to head in a specific direction. The selection of a direction is the first step towards the bull’s-eye.
The objective is to learn something new; anything will do.
It’s a small act of focus that will begin to retrain your brain to have objectives once again. The objective doesn’t have to be “important”; it just needs your recurring attention.
If you find yourself in the fog of aimlessness, the worst thing you can do is ask yourself, “Why am I this way?” The best thing you can do is to wonder and say, “What direction can I head in today?”
Inertia is not an option when addressing aimlessness. Only a purposeful step will clear the fog and get you homed-in on a target to shoot for.
You don’t need to shoot for the moon. Just aim at something you can hit. It’s a small act of purpose that puts a fulfilling life back in sight.
