Keep Your Sensations Closer Than Your Thoughts - Grasshopper

Your thoughts may betray you; your sensations never will. It’s only a thought that can get you to turn your back on a sensation.

In the court of life, are you about to make another case with your head? It’ll be banal compared to the brief your body will present.
Notice that the sensations show up for court first. This practice only curries favor with the judge if he’s paying complete attention. Most often our judge is paying attention to the syntax and logic of an argument that lacks substance.
Sensations are substance. You can feel them, yet we attempt to talk our way out of them.
Sensations are our pure first response. They get there well before our thinking mind. When our first thought arrives later, it is watered down by the erosion caused by our stream of consciousness.
A sensation doesn’t need interpretation; it just needs our attention. It’s communicating something in a language that can’t be parsed.
Paying attention to our sensations will nudge us in a direction that needs no debate or commentary.
Long before you had a thought, you had a sensation, but we’ve been conditioned to ignore these first responders in favor of our Johnny-come-lately thoughts about them.
Learning to pay attention to your sensations is really a relearning process. Sensation is how we began our life. And our whole life has become an attempt to outgrow them, rather than reconnect with them.
At one time, you didn’t have to know the words, “damp, wet and stinky” or understand the concept they conveyed to feel the sensation.
Yet we have “progressed” to a mind filled with smelly thoughts that constantly debate each other and delay any action that would provide relief. Sensation is the surefire shortcut to a solution that sidesteps debate.
You won’t be able to talk your way out of a sensation. It will remain present until it is acknowledged and felt.
Begin to notice when your sensations arise, and before you can label them, feel them. Your feeling will be a better barometer for action than any 5-step plan you could write after the fact.
My sensational message is this: Give attention to your tingles; they’ll provide you with better direction than any man made GPS.
All the best,
John
