The Step You’re On Now Determines Your Path - Grasshopper
Perhaps it's never occurred to you but the most important step is the one you are on now.
What you do with your current step sets the course for where you will step next.
This is another way of saying that you can only begin now. You can't begin yesterday, and if you plan to begin tomorrow, it will be now, then.
Paying attention to the step you are on pays dividends. Is your current step getting your full attention? If not, you may misstep.
How often do we complain about the step we are on? The reality is it's the only step we can be on in that moment. If we give that moment more of our attention rather than attempt to escape from it, we set a better foundation for our next step.
Your next step will resemble your current step if you refuse to pay attention. This lack of attention continually sets us up to map out our own route to the highway to hell.
Not paying attention to your current step has it replicate itself outside of your awareness, sort of like wire closet hangers. One day you recognize you have a worthless collection.
You can be a terrific planner, but you'll trip over your own feet if you don't give your full attention to the step you are on.
Imagine you are in a pharmacy for a moment. Observe the pharmacist. One of the skills a trained pharmacist has is to pay attention to the one prescription they are filling in the moment. There may be people lined up to get his or her attention, but their focus is on filling that one prescription.
Whatever you are prescribing to the world will be tainted or askew if you don't give the step you are on your full attention.
Tomorrow's destination depends on the steps you take today.
What step are you refusing to take? Unless you take it, you can never arrive where you say you want to be.
You can have all your tomorrows deliver more sorrows if you don't take that step now.
Stepping into the future begins with the step you are currently on. If you notice you are side stepping some issues, now is the time to course correct your step.
It may be time to step up.
Ask yourself: "Is the step I'm taking paving the way to the future I'm planning?" If the answer is "No," you're certain to stop many times before you can go.
The way forward is to step lively. That means each step has to be an alive step - one that you are paying attention to.
For many, it's never easy accepting where they wind up, but if they look back and follow the breadcrumbs, they can easily see the steps that got them here.
The way out depends on the next step. Every moment is a crossroads. Choose wisely.
All the best,
John
