Your Life Lives Between A Snapshot And A Vision - Grasshopper
A snapshot is always about the past; a vision is always about the future. The question is: “What reflects what’s going on now?”
The answer reveals your life - a mirror.
A mirror is an unemotional object that measures the reality of now.
Wonderful memories can be generated by snapshots, and visions are nutritious carrots to nibble on as we move towards our future, but there is no better barometer on the quality of our life than a mirror.
The “way it was” and the “way it can be” are nice places to visit but the more time we spend there the less time we spend living our life, which can only be lived in the moment we’re in.
Spend time in front of your mirror and accept the reality that you see. Mirrors don’t sugarcoat the truth and they don’t reflect past or future realities; they show you your life now.
Now is your life - not yesterday or 5 minutes from now. A mirror can’t show you what went on yesterday or 7 years from now, even if you break it. A mirror can only reflect current reality.
Current reality is your life. There is no getting around that. There is no wiggle room.
Mirrors are tools of self acceptance. When we accept exactly what’s reflected, we are dealing with “the facts of life.” It’s from this base of reality that we make grounded decisions rather than create more escapist behavior.
There’s no better way to get to where you are going than to know where you currently are. That’s the beauty reflected by a mirror.
There are so many false barometers we use to delude ourselves as to our current location that it’s impossible to plan a route forward.
My friend and teacher Jerry Stocking underscores this reality when he says, “Let’s pretend you only think you are 25% full of shit when you’re really 100%, and you go to work on cleaning that up. Even if you are successful, you’re still 75% full of shit.”
We are mentally constipated if we think our life is anything but what is going on right now. This is it.
When you notice that reality in your mirror, that’s when you begin to lose your excess baggage that prevents you from living the life you have.
All routes forward have to travel through now. A look in the mirror will give you the most accurate assessment of where you are now.
Live the moment that your mirror reflects. Respond to that moment and feel the essence of life moving through you. You can get there from here as long as here is “here and now.”
Here is something worth reflecting on: Yesterday’s dream of tomorrow’s vision can only happen through the portal of the magic mirror known as now.
All the best,
John
