And your performance is so off Broadway as to be in another state.

Did you ever rehearse a conversation you planned to have with someone? You played both parts in your head. It was the home version of “He said/She said.”

You prepared for every eventuality. When they said this, you would say that. Have you ever noticed it never comes out the way you rehearsed? Life is not about rehearsing reality but noticing and responding to it.

The same is true about an argument you are having in your head. Who are you arguing with?

We’ve all seen the “angel” and “devil” on the shoulder scenario in a comic book, magazine, cartoon or movie. The participants have a good old back and forth about the best thing to do, while the person listening to their rhetoric is torn between the posturing.

What’s really going on is we are creating a conversation with ourselves about a process that’s taking place within us. Here is the process: Your conscious mind is having an oppositional thought to your patterned behavior.

Here is where it becomes theatre. We assign a speaking part to the unconscious, patterned part of us. That would be as cruel and ineffective as casting Helen Keller as “Annie.”

The patterned portion of your mind (the unconscious) doesn’t speak; it just acts. It takes a piece of learned behavior and puts it on display when a specific stimulus is presented. It does that over and over again without any thinking or debate.

When we start to argue with the behavior, we are not arguing with the pattern, but the speaking role we have assigned to it. That means we are doing a lot of talking in our head and no one is listening.

Start to notice the conversations in your head, especially the ones that go to and fro. What you will notice is they take you nowhere. It’s like attempting to traverse the English Channel by treading water.

In order for patterns to change, action is a necessary ingredient. Action is a language your unconscious understands. Noticing is the initial action. The next step, interruption, is the big stick that gets your pattern’s attention.

Rather than debating the actions of your patterned behavior, notice it and interrupt it. Each interruption causes the pattern to have less effect. Think of it as toilet training your mind.

If you have ever toilet trained a child, you know that it’s not a once in awhile proposition. Success is dependent on continually noticing and staying vigilant by interrupting the undesired pattern while it’s happening. The “other than conscious” learning that takes place is that this behavior is unwanted. The new behavior is much more quickly learned when the old behavior is continually interrupted.

How much time are you willing to spend debating and delaying action? For many, it’s a lifetime.

It’s really this simple: You can continue to give a performance that no one is paying attention to or you can take action. That choice is always present, we just don’t happen to notice.
