The Universal Best Answer - Grasshopper

I’m hesitant to use the word “best” because it can be an argument starter. But I think there’s little argument of what the best answer is.

When you’re seeking answers to life’s thorny questions, the best answers come from a bigger database than your experience, conditioning, or memory. They come from a vast universe of wisdom.

This storehouse of infinite knowledge is accessed by engaging an ability that we don’t use often enough. That ability is the ability to respond. A response is most often the best answer.

By contrast, a reaction, which is a conditioned habit, will take us to the same place each time. A response takes us to uncharted territory that's loaded with resources.

Pat answers are a lazy person’s retort. They don’t take time to get out the door and explore; they just stay at home with their stale reactions which reek of manure.

A response comes after a reaction. The key is to let your instant reaction go by and wait for a response to take its place. It will not only be a better answer, but it will often have you save face.

Learn to recognize your reactions and just let them slide by. By doing so, you’ll be fishing in an infinite pond, reeling in the best answers because you have learned to respond.

All the best,
John
