Firsts - Grasshopper

I’m a big fan and celebrator of firsts: the first time you successfully did something you deemed undoable.

There is such a feeling of accomplishment associated with these events.

What I find is that firsts are inversely proportional to the number of candles on our birthday cake. That means as we age, we don’t try to do new things with the same frequency as we used to.

Call it “set in our ways,” “uninspired,” or just plain “old.” But no matter the label we choose, it’s pretty much a fact that many of us can’t recall the last time we attempted a first.

This message is more than encouragement to try new things. It’s an invitation to experience the feeling of accomplishment more often. It’s available to us every day.

The good news is, we don’t have to attempt major first events to get this feeling. The feeling comes no matter the size of the goal. That’s because our nervous system has a specific feeling response to what we call accomplishment, whether it’s climbing a mountain or learning a new way to use a piece of software we routinely use.

Want to feel more accomplished? First, set mini goals to learn or do new things. Then, make the effort to do them.

Now, the only question you need to ask yourself is: Which one do I try first?

All the best,

John
