Do The Things You’re Good At - Grasshopper

My neighbor, who was a long-time friend, died a couple of years ago. He was gifted at what he did and years before he left us, he offered me a gift that changed my focus.

I was between careers at the time and was considering doing something new and novel. I explained it to my friend, and he said, “John, do what you’re good at, not something you have to learn from scratch.”

It got me to examine what I was good at and to focus on how I could use those skills to fashion a new career. It was some of the best advice I ever received.

What are you good at? What comes to you almost as naturally as breathing? That’s what would benefit you the most in any new undertaking.

My friend’s advice was right up there with another solid piece of input I received but sadly ignored and would up paying a price for. Namely: Don’t ever take a job just for the money. Yes, if you’re destitute and need food and shelter, take the job. But if you have a choice, choose something you’re good at.

Take the time to do a personal skills assessment and find out what comes to you easily. Then, look to apply those skills in an area where those abilities are needed. It’s your best chance for success, and more importantly, fulfillment.

If you need a guidepost, ask yourself, “What am I happiest doing?” It’ll be a major clue towards seeking what to do.

Looking to do some good in the world? Do what you’re good at.

All the best,

John
