Q: Who Are You? A: The Awareness Beyond The Labels - Grasshopper

One of lifeís certainties is that any label you accept or that adheres to you will limit you. When you recognize your awareness, the labels peel away and wonít stand in your way.

 

We spend a good portion of our life collecting labels and we resemble a car with a bevy of bumper stickers. Getting rid of them is a long, tedious process until you become aware; then they miraculously disappear into thin air.

 

Whether you like the label you live behind or not, it sticks to you like glue when you remain unaware.

 

Lifeís big secret is that you are awareness, but masquerade as a nametag. Itís the charade thatís played out everyday by just about everyone.

 

You can recognize your awareness right now by doing this tiny experiment: For the next minute, observe the thoughts that go through your mind. Notice the thoughts that pop in, one right after another. Donít engage with your thoughts; just notice them.

 

What we miss on a regular basis is that the part of us that observes is truly who we are. Notice that the observer has no agenda. It doesnít judge or catalog; it just observes. Conversely, the thought we get stuck on is a label that we begin to identify with and make an argument for.

 

So who are you? If youíre the label, you have to make an argument for it. If youíre the awareness, no argument is necessary because there is no label to be for or against.

 

The next time you get caught up in an internal struggle inside your head, take a moment to become aware of the tug of war from the observerís chair. Just taking this angle of view letís you know your thoughts are not you. The observer is you and youíre impervious to any labelís glue.

 

Up until now, you may not have known that you are the awareness. Once you recognize this incredible distinction, your mind becomes quieter and more peaceful. Observing makes room for new ideas to flow through so labels canít stick to you.
